Hypnotherapy is a form of complementary therapy that utilises the power of positive suggestion to bring about subconscious change to our thoughts, feelings and behaviour.
The process itself aims to alter our state of consciousness in a way that relaxes the conscious part of the mind while simultaneously stimulating and focusing the subconscious part. This heightened state of awareness – reached using skilled relaxation techniques – allows the therapist to then make appropriate suggestions.
What Hypnotherapy isn’t – Hypnotherapy isn’t stage hypnosis. When most people in South Glos. or Bristol, think of hypnosis, they envision someone waving a watch in front of their face and telling them that they are getting sleepy, very, very sleepy. Thanks to stage shows, people then think that a hypnotist will have them do ridiculous things in this trance-like state. However, this is not what hypnosis is. During hypnosis, you are not put to sleep. Rather, you are put in a very alert, focused space, where your mind is open and you are able to concentrate on one specific things. A hypnotist is then able to place ideas in your head that will help you with the obstacle you are seeking to overcome, such as telling you that you are not hungry if you are looking to lose weight. No-one can be hypnotised against their will and even when in trance people can still reject any of the suggestions given if they are not appropriate.
An initial consultation, generally lasting around one hour involves the following:
- A discussion about your requirements and goals.
- An explanation of how the brain works and what the hypnotherapy process is.
- Gathering personal information such as sleeping patterns, lifestyle information, medical symptoms or medication, any treatments involving other healthcare providers.
Subsequent sessions can include some of the following elements:
- A discussion about improvements seen since the last appointment.
- A review of the brain and where anxiety, anger, depression etc. comes from.
- Trance, where you are lead into a state of deep physical and mental relaxation using techniques and approaches to help you towards your goals.
- Time for any questions you may have and a summary of the session and any progress made thus far.

If you are looking to work with a hypnotherapist in South Glos. or Bristol then you may want to know is whether this type of professional accepts insurance. Some insurance plans offer mental health and general well being, cover professionals such as counselors and therapists. As such, you may find yourself wondering if a hypnotherapist falls under this category and would be covered by insurance.
Unfortunately The Peterson Practice like many hypnotherapists does not accept insurance for hypnotherapy services, as most insurance plans do not cover hypnotherapy services. If you are wondering if your insurance does cover any type of service, including hypnotherapy, it is always best to talk to your insurance provider and to obtain a list of specialists who do accept insurance for covered services. While we at The Peterson Practice Hypnotherapy do not accept insurance, we offer fair rates to help you afford the services you need.
