Couples Therapy
Think you might need couples therapy ? Most of us have spent more time with our partners lately than we do usually. More time at home, less social interactions with others, less time out of the home environment unless it’s for work.
How have you found things? Social media has been filled with pictures of family days, long walks and garden adventures but the reality has felt very different for some people. From resentment over working vs furlough, responsibilities for childcare and home schooling to battles over domestic duties, it’s not surprising that not everyone is living in a blissful bubble.
As a solution focused psychotherapist, I can help you work towards a future you want to live.
If you are feeling increasingly resentful of your partner, for whatever reason, and want to start to move past it, I can help.
Couples and marriage therapy is about exploring what each of you want, perhaps moving past recent events so that you can both make a rational decision about the future.
In my sessions you will get the chance to talk freely and confidentially, discussing any challenges you came up against and how the experience made you both feel.
Whilst couples therapy is ideally suited to couples attending the sessions together, sometimes one partner may be reluctant to attend, so you can look to speak to a couples therapist on your own, to begin with. You might find your partner wants to join you after you’ve had some initial sessions alone and it can be helpful to intersperse couple sessions with individual sessions.
What is Couples Therapy?
Couples Therapy integrates several evidence based psychological approaches to explore problematic patterns in the relationship and help couples resolve problems. Therapists work with clients to create a shared perspective of their relationship. They may work with a couple to give them strategies to improve their communication, manage their emotions and give them strength and resilience in their problem solving. Therapists may also encourage a couple to reflect on thoughts and feelings and understand how they influence our patterns of interaction. The aim is to address the barriers that have stopped a couple from connecting in the way they used to.
Relationship distress is a common problem and is strongly linked to other psychological and physical health problems. Many couples find difficulties start after a painful event or illness, or following a significant life change. Couples therapy can help with depression and isolation, mental health issues and parenting issues as well as general relationship distress.
