PTSD, Trauma and Anxiety Support
Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is a condition that some people may experience after being subjected to a trauma. We often think of PTSD and its associated social anxiety as being confined to military personnel, however it is estimated that about 1 in 10 of all people will experience PTSD at some point of their lives.
PTSD is often triggered by trauma such as road traffic accidents, bereavement, domestic abuse, burglary or any form of loss. Everyone is different and a traumatic event for one person may be just an upset for another. The only gauge is that if you experienced trauma then it was a traumatic event. PTSD appears to be caused by the mind responding to ‘un-processable trauma’ , it therefore shuts down normal operation and the individual will believe that the trauma is happening again. The trauma itself is not filed away like normal memories and so the brain cannot refer to the trauma as a memory. The continual reliving of the trauma creates distress because the emotions and dangers associated with the events can be as strong if not stronger than at the time of the trauma itself.
It can be a very complex condition and one that we are still only just beginning to understand. It appears to create an almost permanent state of alarm which is exhausting and the responses can range from violence and anger to an emotional numbness where you lose interest in any enjoyable activities and feel distant from others.
If you or a loved one is experiencing PTSD it is important to know that your recovery path should look to address both the symptoms and the underlying condition. NICE guidance updated in 2018 recommends the use of trauma focused psychological treatments for Post Traumatic Stress Disorder in adults.
